Can’t Find a Job?  How to Shift Your Mindset When Good Jobs are Hard to Find.

    After 20 months without a full-time role, Daniel was struggling to find a job and beginning to panic.

    Daniel is smart, experienced, and has a solid resume. He’s hit ambitious performance goals, both individual and with the teams he led. And yet, his applications were disappearing into the void. In the last few months, he’d gotten very few callbacks, and even fewer interviews. Mostly, just silence.

    As is typical for Daniel, he’d done his homework, reading a lot of job search best practice advice. He’d updated his LinkedIn, customized his resume for different roles, submitted thoughtful cover letters, and proofread every application carefully. He’d been doing everything right, but still couldn’t find a job. He was stuck. After hundreds of applications over many months, his professional self-confidence had taken a serious hit.

    Daniel’s experience isn’t unique. In fact, it’s something we’re seeing again and again—especially among experienced professionals coming out of the tech industry. The past two years have brought historic layoffs, hiring freezes, and a market being actively reshaped by AI and efficiency mandates.     Application Stage Mindset: Reclaim Your Value

    That recruiter’s feedback sparked something in Daniel. He realized that the way he was applying: hesitant, cautious of making mistakes, almost apologetic—didn’t match the real value he brought.

    So, he paused the job boards and opened a blank document. His first task? Make a list of wins.

    Not responsibilities. Not job titles. But accomplishments. What had he improved, created, led, or turned around?

    He began to remember:

    • Reducing churn by successfully managing a risky customer onboarding flow redesign.
    • Breaking a logjam to deliver a stalled product, and communicating with stakeholders to keep everyone informed and onboard.
    • Mentoring multiple junior teammates into leadership roles over the years.

    As he added detail to each line, his posture began to change along with his internal voice.

    Mindset shift:

    From “I’ve been out too long” → to “I’ve delivered meaningful results—and I’m still that person.”

    When he returned to his resume, he stopped frantically tailoring it out of desperation. He  moved past his struggle to find a job in the current environment and rewrote it with pride and purpose. That sense of clarity began to bleed into his applications and beyond.

    Focus Stage Mindset: Get Specific, Even If It Feels Risky

    Before this conversation, Daniel had slowly begun to expand his idea of what jobs he “could do” as he felt increasingly desperate, until lately he’d been applying to very many jobs—roles only kind of adjacent to his strengths, industries he didn’t really know that well, job titles that didn’t excite him.

    “If I just apply to more jobs, one of them has to work out,” he thought.

    But that recruiter gave him a challenge: narrow your focus to roles where your expertise is undeniable.

    So he did. Daniel picked three job types where his strengths matched up perfectly. He stopped applying to jobs that were “close enough,” and instead poured his energy into submitting targeted, specific applications that showcased obvious alignment.

    Mindset shift:

    From “I think I could probably do that” → to “I’m exactly what this role needs.”

    The result? Within two weeks, he had an interview for job he really wanted and for which he had a really good shot. He wasn’t trying harder. He was just showing up differently.

    Interview Stage Mindset: Show Up as the Solution

    Daniel used to approach interviews trying to avoid mistakes. He didn’t want to say the wrong thing, didn’t want to get tripped up on resume gaps, and definitely didn’t want to “oversell” himself.

    But now, he approached interviews thinking like a consultant. They have a problem. I know how to solve it.

    He chose 2–3 stories that directly addressed the key challenges in the job description. He practiced telling them with detail and energy. And when he was asked about something outside his experience, he didn’t bluff. He simply said:

    “That’s a system I haven’t worked with yet, but I’ve picked up new platforms quickly, and I’d be excited to learn this one.”

    Mindset shift:

    From “I hope they like me” → to “Here’s how I can make your team better.”

    He also learned to pause when asked tough questions. That calm, thoughtful energy made him stand out. “You were the most grounded candidate we interviewed,” one hiring manager told him later.
